2011 Westminster Highlights

2011 was an incredible year for me in many ways, not least because of some of the massive events I covered in Westminster. I've been lucky enough to work for two organisations within The Palace of Westminster since covering a huge Africa seminar in 2005 (where I got to photograph Desmond TuTu). One of the things I enjoy about photographing these events is that you see a lot of eminent speakers.

Parliamentary Conference

I was the official photographer for the 57th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference, hosted at Westminster. The conference was attended by MPs and officials from parliaments all around the Commonwealth. The delegation were addressed by many speakers including Prime Minister David Cameron and Foreign Secretary William Hague. The conference was officially opened by Princess Anne in a ceremony at Westminster Hall.

Great week in Spain visiting my parents (above) with friends Mark & Polly and their family. The week flew past with the parties, meals out, games of Tennis and hours in the pool. Poppy learned to dive and Skye learned to put a bread basket on her head!

Street Party at Spring Grove

I took these outside The Spring Grove Pub in Kingston. As you can see it was a brilliant Royal Wedding party. The band are called Plan B and they rocked! The pub kindly let me onto the roof and someone shouted "There's a shooter on the roof". Someone else shouted "It's Louis Theroux!"

Meanwhile my family and I were enjoying an epic Bar-B-Q. Many thanks to our generous hosts!

Happy Birthday Rose Theatre

Kingston's Rose Theatre celebrated it's third birthday this week. The birthday party included a brilliant performance of Peter Brook's Love is my Sin starring Micheal Pennington (pictured, second from top) and Natasha Parry.

Peter Brook attended the party and is shown above (top picture, left) with another legendary theatre director, Sir Peter Hall.

Charity Donations

Barrett & Coe (Kingston) has raised £400 for two excellent charities in 2010.

The money has been donated to Bliss (which supports premature babies and their families) and the Love a Child foundation (which helps children living in poverty in some of the poorest countries around the world).

The Three Musketeers

The Three Musketeers, a new musical, has opened at the Rose Theater in Kingston and is playing until 2nd January 2011. I haven't seen it yet but the reviews have been excellent.

These pictures were taken on the press night, attended by Dawn French. She's pictured above with Francis Matthews, the Director of the show. The other pictures show the leading cast members.

Westminster Events

Spent much of the past two weeks covering some fascinating seminars and meetings at Westminster. Firstly, there was a delegation of MPs visiting from Tajikistan. They are shown above during a lunch meeting at Lancaster House (top picture).

Then there were over 50 MPs from around the Commonwealth attending a seminar about parliament and governance. This included meetings at the Supreme Court (5th picture) and at Speaker's House, hosted by the Speaker of The House of Commons, John Bercow MP (final picture).

Had a fascinating week photographing the International Parliamentary Conference on Climate Change. The evidence for Climate Change is overwhelming and all the actions we can take to reduce CO2 emissions are hugely important.

The top picture shows the delegates in Westminster Hall. Below that is James Smith, Chairman of Shell UK; Chris Huhne MP, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change; Lord Adair Turner, Chair of the Climate Change Committee and Mr Speaker, chairing a debate amongst the delegates.

Drawing Competition

The images show the first winners of the family portrait drawing competition being run by Barrett & Coe, Kingston. The competition is still going on and entry is open to children aged under 12 in participating Kingston restaurants (currently Frankie & Benny’s, Strada, Tony Roma and now Frere Jacques). Had a brilliant time photographing Corinne & Dimith’s wedding on Saturday. A great couple, wonderful guests and two excellent venues; Islingston Town Hall and The Hospital Club in Covent Garden. (The latter is a very cool private members club set up by Dave Stewart of Eurythmics and Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft).

It was great to see two of my previous wedding couples amongst the guests – Lou & Mark and Jane & Pete (who had twins just 2 weeks ago – many congratulations!). And congratulations to Corinne & Dimith on a wonderful wedding!

Drawing Competition

A new Barrett & Coe drawing competition is happening in Kingston. In participating restaurants kids aged under 12 can draw a picture of their family and enter it into the competition. There'll be a first prize of a fantastic family photography package worth £375 plus lots of runners-up prizes.

Human Trafficking Seminar

I’ve been photographing a seminar on Human Trafficking. MPs from 20 countries met at Westminster for two days to discuss issues such as domestic slavery and child trafficking. Panellists included The Speaker of The House of Commons and Claire Short MP.

There are over 10,000 people in slavery in the UK and more than 1000 of them are children.

Antony Steen MP organised an awareness-raising exhibition in The House of Commons. The exhibition was opened by Alan Johnson, The Home Secretary, and William Hague, the Shadow Foreign Secretary (pictured with Anthony Steen). The exhibition included the opportunity to meet women who had escaped from domestic slavery in Britain, such as the one in the picture (her face is not shown for legal reasons).

Alex Comes Home

On 5th December Alex had to go into hospital with what turned out to be pneumonia caused by a flu virus. Thankfully she has now recovered and she has come home after spending 12 days in hospital. She’s had to put up with severe pain (and has been weened off the morphine!) and constant other aggros such as the lady in the bed next to her with the world’s loudest ring tone. Of course, she missed Poppy (3 ½) and Skye (2 months) hugely. Both girls have been amazing throughout. At first Skye joined me in the studio whilst Poppy stayed with friends for most of the weekend. Then my mother came over from Spain to help out and Alex’s parents returned from their cruise and pitched in as well. Huge thanks to everyone who has helped look after the girls, cheered Alex up in hospital or has sent us their best wishes - we really appreciate it!

Since Alex also works in the business, running the studio during the Christmas period has been pretty hectic. With only a few minor set backs we are on track to deliver everyone’s pictures in time for Christmas.

Sammy & Jo’s Wedding

Yesterday I photographed Sammy & Jo’s wedding at Pembroke Lodge in Richmond Park. A great day! The weather was perfect (and we had hail this morning which shows how lucky we were). It was dry and bright and we were able to do some great shots outdoors. The venue was excellent as always. It’s a special place for me anyway having got married there myself but the people there are always brilliant and make everything run smoothly. Many thanks to Nelson and all the other staff for all your help. Thanks also to Elma (Barrett and Coe photographer) for your able assistance.

Week in Westminster

I've spent a lot of this week shooting the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association's 4th Governance Seminar. Around 50 MPs from around the Commonwealth have been visiting Westminster and City Hall to share ideas on governance. Next week they are off to Glasgow, Edinburgh and Brussels to continue their seminar.

There was lots of great discussion going on. Simon Hogart from The Guardian and Norman Smith from the BBC gave a fascinating talk about the influence of the media in government and how you can't always believe what you see on 24 hour news channels (not to mention blogs!).

Another highlight was hearing the youth choir from Anglesey. Having won a national competition they performed at the Royal Albert Hall on Wednesday. The picture shows them with the Speaker, John Bercow; Leader of the House of Commons, Harriet Harman and Albert Owen, MP for Anglesey.

The bed pictured is in the Speaker’s residence within the Palace of Westminster. This is the bed in which a new monarch sleeps on the night before their coronation at Westminster Abbey.
